Agreed Doc.
I'm not putting Bill down, just think there are comparative degrees of talent.
I think Grace Slick was fantastic, but if I was to form an opinion between her and say
Linda Ronstadt - I'd give it to Linda as being a notch above.
I look at JPM as a rare all around talent that was a talent right out of the gate.
From his mid teens to mid 20s is what we're really exposed to - primarily those 3 or 4
years in his 20s.
And look at the volume and quality in that little slice of time.
Bill I think was certainly a talent (coming into the group) that developed and grew.
But look at his environment - growing in the soil of the beatles.
Couldn't hurt.
I remember reading (off this forum) some expressions about 'what happened to
Paul M? A guy that wrote classics like yesterday, then later - silly love songs, etc.'
'It's like it's not the same guy!'
Interesting way to word it.
But Bill has had some great stuff for sure.
I think Bill could play guitar, but his main instrument was piano.
And I think it's no coincidence that we see him on piano more than anything else
when he makes his appearance.
Your avg person (not into PWR) can let the obvious slip by.
There's a reason the Beatles can't play live post '66
Without JPM it can't be pulled off successfully.
There's a reason 'Paul' focuses on keyboard
There's a reason we don't find 'Paul' winding out on bass on a vid.
(we do see pick-synching on for instance, Hello, Goodbye - doesn't count - I could do that)
FP mentions the Rooftop.
Exactly.
It takes between 2 and 3 years before anyone is comfortable Bill leaving the studio
and playing live right in front of onlookers.
And he does a great job.
But he's been practicing.
He's not laying brick - his job IS music and practicing.
That's why an outsiders gaze really couldn't be on Bill's bass playing.
(at the start)
-but more on something like his keyboard playing - something
he was ALREADY really good at
You can edit video, put a mustache on someone, change hair styles,
but one thing you can't fake is talent in front of live people.
They knew the obvious back then and dealt with it just as they did.
-and fooled a 'coupla' people too. (meself included)
