Have any of you seen this? John wrote this in 1965, so it's not an after the time frame clue, but it is an example of how he plays with words. The book was a mix of short (really short) stories and poems. He commonly takes a word and adds or subtracts letters to make another word; the words he makes sometimes are real, sometimes invented. Dismay becomes dismable, actual becomes actually, "hammering their teeth', instead of "hammering their hooves", see how it is? I'd bet "Walrus" was like one of these stories, everything all mixed up. The writings could be a little offensive in these days of political correctness, so be warned.. Here are some scans of a couple of the stairies in the bloke's, take a book! ;D

Love it. How totally John. I've never seen this book--I have ben very curious about it. Thank you for posting these ascerbs. Whoops. The lyric to "I Am the Walrus" now seems a little more inside the box, after reading those constructions. But, it does serve to establish a certain pattern of, not only general wordplay, but a particular breed of malapropisms, where mere sound, rhythm, or consonance or rhyme are "modified" into syllables or words with a similar "ring." Actual, your description JoJo says it best and simplest. So, the indication is that a phrase like "crabalocker fishwife" is possibly one of these substitutes. That's just one example. I'm clueless as to where to "redirect" that phrase toward. Argh, there are plenty of directions to go in. Might not be a worthwhile chase. I study the lyrics; I have them at hand. Hmmm. (some thyme ellipses) Trying to interpret John Lennon made me feel a tish like Little Writ Writing Good (or maybe not-so-good), because I got lost in the words trying to egg-scape from the big bad "well-if" . You know, "well-if he said this, he meant that.............." All groans are appreciated.

Glad you liked it Doc, again, if you want to buy it, there are several affiliate used book store at Barnesandnoble.com that have it for sale, and fairly cheaply. One thing that came to mind pretty quick: yellow matter custard could be grey matter (something)... But what direction to go, so difficult. I think I remember reading him saying something about the lyrics to Walrus like "well let them try to figure THAT out".
