I know about the reversed 5 cuckoos and the number read off... but the lyrics.... Denis O'Bell? O'Bell = Campbell? This sounds like Bill's first show, or a club show singing as McCartney...

It's not O'Bell that he's saying. That is either a mis-read on the part of the person who wrote the lyrics or a deliberate clue. When I listen to that song ( & I have listened to it at least 3 times over the past 3 days. I have it on a CD that I made myself ) it sounds to me like Dennis O'Phelps. I have always thought that song was very strange. I think it was on a bootleg Christmas album that I bought as a child. That song & Christmas time is here again have always disturbed me.

It was on the b side of a single my sis had, can't remember the A side. I played that as a kid, and it does sound like a cabaret type of act. Which I believe Bill was a cabaret performer before taking on the role of Paul Mc Cartney.

this is a reference to denis O'Dell of Apple Corps.
Denis O'Dell, one of the four original non-Beatle directors of Apple Corps, head of Apple Films and a close friend of the Beatles from the early days of Beatlemania through to the group’s demise and beyond.
DENIS O’DELL was already an established film producer when he first became involved with the Beatles in 1964. He was central to the production of such Beatles-related films as A Hard Day’s Night, How I Won the War, Magical Mystery Tour, Let It Be and The Magic Christian.
