IMO it was one of those things that "just wasn't talked about" with "outsiders". Sort of like skeletons in the family closet that everyone is aware of, but no one discusses -- and if someone outside the family mentions it, it's denied...

Ditto. Surely the Stones, Donovan, Denny Laine, and others in the inner circle knew. Once he got serious with Linda (and they got serious fast, did they not?), she was probably let in.
