Stumbled across this little bit of trivia recently, so far I've only been able to find this, from: www.imdb.com/title/tt0063518/trivia According to Franco Zeffirelli's autobiography, Paul McCartney was originally asked to play the part of Romeo. This was of course the pre-Dicaprio version in 1968..

From your indication, I think I would assume so. Good find, JoJo. Internet Movie Data Base is a large, and I think, reliable, storehouse. - What Is A Youth? Lyrics What is a youth? Impetuous fire. What is a maid? Ice and desire. The world wags on.
A rose will bloom It then will fade So does a youth. So do-o-o-oes the fairest maid.
Comes a time when one sweet smile Has its season for a while...Then love's in love with me. Some they think only to marry, Others will tease and tarry, Mine is the very best parry. Cupid he rules us all. Caper the cape, but sing me the song, Death will come soon to hush us along. Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall. Love is a task and it never will pall. Sweeter than honey...and bitter as gall Cupid he rules us all.Oh, no, no. The last lines is all wrong. It should be Cu-PID, he rules us all...............

I thought he was asked to play the part of St. Francis... Yes, or rather he wanted to use the Beatles in his movie about St Francis. It looked like it might have happened, but getting them all to get together wasn't working, it increasingly appeared that it just wouldn't be possible, so he dropped the idea.. Don't know where that business about Romeo came from.. The internet is like that I guess...
