So, I went to a Patti Lupone concert last week (yes I adore her, too) and she did a version of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again, Naturally", which, though Patti's style seems foreign to such (though she interpreted it great)--it made me, in my inner mind, hear the original Gilbert O. recording. Though I've not heard the original in years and years, I suddenly made a connection---his VOICE and song-writing style is (was) very similar to the McCartney who wrote Michelle and Yesterday, Rigby, etc. THe balladeer sound. The story song style. The very catchy melodies, the lyrics that drive a point home; the poetic twists and turns of the Irish mind like a rock-n-roll Yeats, or Joyce---- THe slightly throaty, partly nasal, aspirant, full bodied, sweetly focused vocal sound of Paul McCartney......... In a flash I get a connection. I look and I find: www.classicbands.com/osullivan.htmland also: www.epinions.com/musc-review-6B69-237C207-38C38F13-prod9So, I'm not crazy. Others hear and sense this similarity too.... I wanna buy his greatest hits. I thought it was too syrupy tinged when I was in high school, his music that is. But, I'm older---and I like what I remember, now. Don't worry--I promise I won't go through a Bobby Goldsboro, or a Neil Diamond phase. Promise. Well, but wait, Neil writes really good songs, sometimes..........and he has that signature "roar" when he sings: F A R! We've been travelin' F A R ........ who can resist that....... But, seriously dudes and dudesses, check out Gilbert's voice! NO! Not Gottfried! N O T G I L B E R T G O T T F R I E D !!! I wanna hear Gottfried sing "There Comin' to America".......gotta hear that sometime. Soon.
