linus It's actually been speculated that the Elusinian Mysteries of the Greeks may have included a psychedelic sacrament made from the Ergot fungus. Not a lot is known about these "mysteries" or what was done, or revealed (as they were secret, of course, hence the name "mysteries" lol). But it is known that they used a beverage they called "kykeon," which was known to be supposedly made from barley, and ergot aka claviceps purpurea can grow on barley. This becomes even more interesting and relevant to the present discussion when we consider that The Elusinian Mysteries were held by the cult of Demeter and Persephone. Demeter, of course, was the goddess of the harvest. So grains (like barley) would have been within her realm. And persephone? Ah yes... Persephone is the Queen of the Underworld. The Queen of the Underworld, who actually went to the underworld, and came back, no less. Death and resurrection symbolism, anyone? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleusinian_Mysteries#Entheogenic_theoriesAnd to bring this whole thing back full circle, I'd have to say that I bet the chemicals found it the ergot fungus would probably make the beatles sound pretty freakin fantastic. Not that I know this from personal experience or anything, of course....
