VoodooGuru, I'm not sure where you get your information that Mary Hopkin "was very popular in other parts of Europe" before signing with Apple.
Mary Hopkin appeared on a talent show called "Opportunity Knocks"; this was nothing like the "talent" shows of today; the viewers had to send in postal votes to see
who was that week's winner and would appear again the following week. No telephone votes as many people in the UK did not have phones in the UK in 1968!
The compere was Hughie Green who used to be in the Canadian Air Force; his catchphrase was, "I mean that most sincerely"....
Apparently, Twiggy was sitting at home watching the program (along with most of the UK population in those days we only had 3 tv channels!) and decided to phone Paul McCartney
(Faul) and told him he must see Mary (age 18) and he subsequently signed Mary Hopkin to Apple. The song Mary sang for the program was "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds
that Laurel Canyon band and Mary won the program for several weeks. Paul/Faul produced her first record an up to date version of the 1920s Russian folk song "Those Were The Days"
which catapulted Mary to stardom.
Mary subsequently met and married American record producer Tony Visconti and her career faded....however, an interesting postscript is that after being married to Mary
for ten years, Tony Visconti (who was the producer for Marc Bolan from 1969) married May Pang, John Lennon's former lover. I thought this very interesting as it seems these
people end up being almost inter-related!
Twiggy herself was obviously on close terms with Paul/Faul and ended up having her own tv show though having very limited talent as a singer.
Also, (re your posts about the Hayley Mills film "The Family Way" and the music soundtrack being "composed by Paul McCartney") was that Twiggy is now married to the former
long term partner of Hayley Mills, Leigh Lawson.
