Some interesting points there Beacon, however, the fact is Chicory Tip were not that successful (maybe one hit wonders and just mediocre). As far as "exploiting a situation to make a profit" with Billy Pepper and the Pepperpots, no one had heard of them, whether they were an imaginary group of session musicians (which it seems they were) or not, and I cannot imagine anyone made any money out of it as no one had heard of that record "Merseymania" and I doubt many were sold. The "Top of the Pops" compilations were sold in supermarkets, not record shops, and would not be bought by young people, who at the time, were the main record-buying public. They would shortly thereafter be found in second hand shops with other junk that no one wanted. No one would buy a "Mersey sound" record with anonymous performers as there would be no point (as I've pointed out previously) when anyone could buy the "real thing".

Also to remember, the "Merseysound" era did not last long anyway; within two years it was all over for most of the Brian Epstein "stable of acts"; of the ones who had a hit record had only one or two, some had none and quickly faded into obscurity, despite the best efforts of Brian Epstein and his assistants at NEMS. The point I am endeavouring to make is that a Merseysound LP by unknown cover artistes would quickly be "old hat". If artistes with names familiar to the public could not sell many records, how was an unknown demo-type record expected to sell? I suspect that is what it was and is being built out of all proportion to it's worth. A song like "Jericho" seems "out of place" and was out of fashion so appears to add nothing to the record as a whole. That era was all about what was "in fashion" including music and clothes.

A "spoof" record springs to mind, with the cover depicting anonymous "musicians". Ramone makes an interesting observation in his last post... These names keep popping up "Pepper, Shepherd, Shears, Bill, William". As for Easterby, that may not have been his real name, for all we know. I still suggest it could be a play on "Easter Bunny" aka "down the rabbit hole"? Just saying...
I would wonder why no one ever thought of making an album of real Merseymania by compiling the hits of the NEMs stable such as The Big Three; Tommy Quickly (Quigly); The Fourmost; The Merseybeats (aka Merseys) Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas; Gerry & The Pacemakers and The Searchers.

It's more than interesting that Mr. Love was producing albums of the same ilk as Bill Sheppard, now isn't it? *************************************************************************************************************
Yes, Geoff Love was a black bandleader of the 1950s/60s era and has no connection with the subject of this thread! No connection at all with "Bill".

Can I put you out of your misery? Bill Shepherd was my father - he is now dead. He was indeed the main writer for the Billy and the Pepperpots album which was his and friends jokey attempt to cash in on the Beatlemania. He was the same man who produced the early Bee Gees records in Australia, and then came back to England with them as their musical arranger. He was English and we emigrated to Australia in the 60's - where he subsequently got a job as a recording engineer at Festival records - and took over recording the Bee Gees. He had his own radio show for a while, then a TV show called One More Time, before moving to Munich and then LA (where he eventually worked for Muzak). He did lots of other arranging work - mostly at IBC studios in the 70's where I eventually got a job as a tape op - and did a lot of French artists. There is no Beatles or Paul connection - although interestingly he worked with a character called Brian Chalmers who claimed to be a cousin of Paul and Mike (Paul's brother). There was some resemblance - although he was extremely camp and involved with producing an Italian singer called Little Tony, and apparently had connections with the mafia. And he was notorious for pushing the story of Paul being replaced after his death by Bill Campbell.... books.google.com/books?id=ugcEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA54&lpg=PA54&dq=Brian+Chalmers+orchestra&source=bl&ots=yL6_GZEnRN&sig=3PGqmcWSaN3xO44_DG6n4odnd-E&hl=en&sa=X&ei=a04yVd_IOMikNrv4gZAK&ved=0CDoQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=Brian%20Chalmers%20orchestra&f=falseBillboard - Feb 10, 1968 - Page 54 "Little Tony - I Love Mary [GIL, BMI] {Prod. As for Brian Chalmers, apparently the apple didn't fall far from the tree. (Assuming this guy was BC Jr.)Can't find anything on his 'father', save a possible mention at the bottom of this page: humble-pie.net/rockon/pie2/html/credits.htmlBrian Chalmers 1955 – 2009buzzardbook.wordpress.com/2009/06/21/brian-chalmers-1955-2009/with Sheryl Crow and Nancy Wilson "We are shocked and saddened to learn of Brian Chalmers’ passing. He was a sensitive, creative, talented artist and designer. Brian was a fine friend and colleague. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.... Brian graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1975 and joined Scene as an illustrator. Brian worked with WMMS for well over a decade ... "but there's more....

I'm not sure the relevance of Brian Chalmers, however, regarding the "Merseymania" discs again it is important to point out the price of records back then to illustrate that this record would not have made much money for the producers or performers. Not just that it is so obscure that not many would have been sold but the price of this record would have been different to an ordinary long playing record.
45 rpm "singles" were 6 shillings and 8 pence; EPs (extended play) 4 tracks were about 15 shillings and long play records (LPs 33and a third rpm) were £2 10 shillings. A "bargain" record like "Merseymania" would have been about 10 shillings and 6 pence. This reflected the fact that it was covers by unknown session musicians.

Sometimes things are just a coincidence. For instance: Here we have a group called "the Primitives" whose record used one of the pictures used on one of the Pepperpots albums. And then, later, a different group comes along called "The Primitives", and their big song is figuratively about a car crash. The Primitives - Crash (Extended Edition) (1988) (HQ) Plucked her eyebrows on the waySo you might think: Well if one of the Pepperpots was a William Shepherd who might have been a guy who replaced Paul McCartney, he would have known about a car crash, and - as a former Pepperpot - he might have known about "The Primitives" who used the Pepperpot image on their record, which was somehow tied in with Lou Reed, and isn't it just something that the new Primitives sang about a crash, which is what may have gotten Mr. Pepperpot his new gig? What a coincidence! And speaking of Lou Reed, his debut album had sort of an Easter-ly theme to its cover. But it's all just a coincidence. A happenstance. Just one of those things. However, later when I have some more time, I'll try to present evidence (albeit circumstantial) that the two William Shepherds may have been in cahoots. Perhaps. Just maybe.

Incidentally, Congratulations to the late Lou Reed for being inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. Lou Reed - Walk On The Wild Side (Lyrics in Description) www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KaWSOlASWcNobody was really sure who this song was about. Holly came from Miami, F.L.A. Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A. Plucked her eyebrows on the way Shaved her legs and then he was a she She says, 'Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side' He said, 'Hey honey, take a walk on the wild side'
Candy came from out on the island In the backroom she was everybody's darlin' But she never lost her head Even when she was giving head She says, 'Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side' He said, 'Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side'
And the colored girls go Doo do doo, doo do doo, doo do doo
Little Joe never once gave it away Everybody had to pay and pay A hustle here and a hustle there New York City's the place where they said 'Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side' I said, 'Hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side'
Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat Went to the Apollo , you should've seen 'em go go go They said, 'Hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side' I said, 'Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side' Alright, huh
Jackie is just speeding away Thought she was James Dean for a day (James Dean died in a car crash.) Then I guess she had to crash Valium would have helped that bash She said, 'Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side' I said, 'Hey honey, take a walk on the wild side'
And the colored girls say Doo do doo, doo do doo, doo do doo

"Jackie is just speeding away" in "Walk on the Wild Side" could be a reference to Jackie Kennedy who shot JFK in the head. So BOTH Paul and JFK were killed in a car and a Jackie killed JFK and the original rumor said that Paul picked up a female hitch hiker and she distracted Paul (maybe she was "giving head"!) and that is why he crashed and died! As people have pointed out before there are many connections with the Beatles and the JFK murder and this is another one. Too bad there was no video.

www.discogs.com/artist/411882-Bill-Shepherdwww.allmusic.com/artist/bill-shepherd-mn0001254379/biographyFairly prolific 'pop' music guy it seems. The only connections to the Beatles appear to be the Pepperpots exploitation record(s) and of course Shepherd's relationship to the Bee Gees and Robert Stigwood who later made the Sgt Pepper moviewell after Shepherd and The Bee Gees parted ways. On another note, the other Billy Shepherd, the music journalist, was the pseudonym of Peter Jones who died this past summer. Seems to me that Apollo C. Vermouth, who initiated this search for the Pepperpots, neither explicitly nor implicitly stated that Billy 'Pepper' became part of the Beatles or even contributed anything to the Beatles. Perhaps the idea of a one-off band that never toured and weren't even pictured on their albums was an inspiration for Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. After all isn't ' Pop' music the stuff that goes ' in and out of style '? ".... the whole of the story involves the "CONCEPT" of a parody of a satire of a band that never existed." "When you come full circle, and it's more akin to a figure of eight, you still end up at the same point you started...... It's all here in black and white" 1. Bill Shepherd creates an imaginary band that parodies the Beatles. Pickwick releases recordings by Billy Pepper and the Pepperpots. At this time Beatlemania is hitting hard and there's money to be made on the confusion. Black and white album covers with fake band members. 2. The Beatles create an imaginary band that parodies the parody. The band is called Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band but the picture on the cover does not contain the band members but the Beatles in disguise.Imaginary band, cover with fake band members.Definitely not in black and white. Because flowers... Beatles parody a Beatle parody alluding to the name of the parody band. The referenced referencing the referencer, see? Full circle / figure eight Perhaps the Sergeant part is a reference to Bills earlier work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idol_on_ParadeWhich also contains a link to Bridge on the River Kwai which Apollo also "...pulled out of his arse". All you need is Love!

lol FACTS ON FILE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WORD AND PHRASE ORIGINS FILL THE BILL: Theatrical companies in the 19th century advertised mainly on posters and handbills that were distributed in towns by advance men several weeks before a show came to town. The name of the troupe’s star performer was featured on these bills in large letters, to the exclusion of the rest of the company—he or she filled the bill, was the show’s star. Soon the vivid image behind this theatrical expression meaning “to star” came to encompass a more complex, broader thought, and by 1860 to fill the bill meant “to be very competent, effective, to do all that is desired, expected, or required.”
