You know, not to get this thread off track (10+ years later) but that Preston Nichol's book "The Music of Time" has some really strange stories about Mark Hamill and his brother.
"It was during this time period that one of my friends in the neighborhood band said his cousin would be very interested in my ESP research. This cousin turned out to be Mark Hamill who I was already familiar with as described earlier. At that time, Mark was a member of a recording group called the "Ohio Express." He volunteered for some of my experiments and we hit it off and became friends. He had a very deep interest in the occult, metaphysics, ESP and all types of psychic phenomena. Originally, he lived in Ohio and would visit his family on Long Island. When he did, we would get together and discuss all sorts of different subjects. I tried to develop his ESP. We pooled our information and sought out many different types of occultism.
Mark was extremely mystical. He consulted astrologers and was always looking for patterns in numbers and names. Mark was not only a metaphysician, he was a gifted and prolific lyricist. He was an extremely talented musician as well and eventually starred on Broadway as Mozart in Amadeus. One of the reasons he was chosen for the role was that his musicianship was flawless. He also had the petulant personality that fit the role of Mozart exactly. He could basically be himself. Although he was offered the role for the movie, he turned it down. Perhaps he did not realize what a big hit it would become or did not want to be typecast in the role. I do not really know what his reasons were, but I saw his performance at least two times and it was excellent.
Before I got to know Mark very well, I was already acquainted with his older brother Chuck, an even more gifted musician. Chuck had been hanging around the studio for some time because he wanted to break into the music business. He had always demonstrated a great interest in electronics, audio systems and weird technology. Chuck was more of a technician than Mark and was down-to-earth. Sometimes he thought his brother was a complete idiot with his head in the clouds. I helped Chuck understand his brother, and I think I kept them in a decent brother relationship. There were times when he would have abandoned Mark had I not stepped in.
Chuck was also very interested in time travel and used to talk to me about it. He asked me if I knew anything about time travel technology or making a time machine. Whenever this subject came up,I could only joke about it. He took it quite seriously and said I would be the one making a time machine for the private sector in the future. When I asked him how he knew this, all he said was that "he had seen it." If I did not know him better at the time, I would have thought that he was just one of the kids in the neighborhood trying to wind up the "scientific nerd" (meaning me) in the community to see what he could get him going on. This was not the case however because he had tremendous respect for my technical abilities. After all, I was the one who made his recordings work.
Since those early years, I have also spoken to quite a few people who believe Chuck to be a time traveler. He was always interested in cutting-edge technology and eventually became very involved in the intelligence community. As I became involved with the Hamills, I began to record their music. I had access to Studio A and Chuck was already familiar with the studio set-up from hanging around. The first record I produced for them was "Beg, Borrow and Steal" which was released by Cameo in October 1967 under the name "Ohio Express." Even though this record made the charts, it did not bring us instant success."

What I am getting at is another source of motivation for these things hidden in plain sight. You could call it the Illuminati, or simply the malevolent forces in this world. As I mentioned in another thread Yoko hit the nail squarely on the head when she said this: "They [The Beatles] were like mediums. They weren't conscious of all they were saying, but it was coming through them." We must remember that Yoko by her own admission is a witch: I can tell you at least some of the things in Albert Goldman's book "The Lives of John Lennon" are likely true, my dad personally observed J&Y going into a popup palm reading place at the unlikely address of Madison Ave. and 86th street in New York City. That block is some of the most expensive real estate in the world, these people had deep pockets. Jackie Onassis lived on that block.

Ah yes; why? Seems so that they can inject the certain desired energetics into the film, artwork, etc. (Sort of like a voodoo charm or even a sigil, if you will).I would also agree with your assessment of "both". Though the idea of them putting "clues/breadcrumbs" in the films, etc. is done by some directors more than others. With some, there's so much to go on, it is beyond the threshold of coincidence; Kubrick, Polanski, Lindsay Anderson, Zemeckis, most of all. Sometimes it's breadcrumbs, sometimes it's to burrow into the subconscious, sometimes it's both, sometimes it's none of the above. The trouble is, a lot of the time it's hard to tell which it is, so you have to just put it all out there. I'd also add, that things are most clear in the theatre on a big screen. For example, if you ever get the chance to see The Shining in the theatre, go. When the Red Book is there, 6 feet wide, it's plain as day. You can also see that Jack is reading a Playgirl magazine in the lobby while waiting for Ullman. On a dvd, it's almost impossible. Okay, that makes sense. Attempting to answer my own question there is the whole school of thought that many symbols have been literally buried in our DNA for millenia and manipulating them is sort of a 'backdoor hack' to put it in programming terms. I'm guessing this is what Jung's book is going to say. It is kinda the same as touching upon the Oedipus complex, isn't it? I was really kinda disturbed when I discovered the hidden meaning in the following Virginia Slims ad from the 70s. Do you see what I see? So the obvious 'why' here is to simply sell some cigarettes, but is there more to it?

At certain points it looks like a flying merkabah which is apropos. [ There's lots of explanations connected to the star, one that comes to mind is that it represents a time traveling machine.

I wouldn't say they're being cursed. I'm open to any possibility, but that's not my stance. I would say the only thing they're (consciously) missing is the archetypal and subtextual energetics of the story. Some directors are obviously and overtly aware of this stratum of their films and it’s affects on the psyche. For instance, the cognitive dissonance experienced by the audience in Kubrick’s films via such things as the subltly changing props and mirror-flipping the film during certain scenes; creating an overall sense of unease. To further illustrate that Kubrick was familiar with the subconscious mind and how to play with it, he has Carl Jung’s Red Book sitting on Ullman’s desk in The Shining. The first chapter is all about this. (Interesting, since The Red Book wasn’t released publicly until 2009). And to drive the point home further, in Poltergeist, the mom is reading Carl Jung’s book Man And His Symbols, but not only that, they actor in the film she’s watching on tv at that very moment is Barry Nelson, who played Ullman in The Shining. And if that wasn’t enough, Nelson’s character is a spirit in heaven in this film, talking to his recently deceased friend who will get to go back down to Earth. For example, I believe I was the first person to discover that if you take the photograph of the Fabs in the WWII ruins and flip them upside down it appears to spell FUCK. How I came to notice this was I had that single and would stare at it and daydream occasionally, have no idea why. I was drawn to it. Maybe my subconscious was telling me to do it. As far as the Heather O'Roarke death that is some pretty compelling synchronicity, especially the poster. How did you come to discover that? It reminds me of the Lennon "Best Way to Go is MD&C". One can guess why he was raging at Polanski at that party. Oh, I just bought a copy of that Jung book Heather's mom is reading on Ebay, same edition I am not totally ignorant of such things, I cut my teeth on Wilson Bryan Key in High School.
